Another tribute to Wisma Merdeka 915. The book I edited there in 2006, A Handbook of Tropical Soil Biology, has now sold 1000 copies since it was published in 2008. So you see, I wasn't looking out the window all of the time. For those of you who know that 1000 copies will not support me in my old age and might be worried, I do have an adequate pension in addition. But 1000 is a good total for an academic work. The book gives my academic address as Institute of Tropical Biology and Conservation, Universiti Malaysia Sabah. They deserve some credit too.

I completely agree about the office in Wisma Merdeka, which Stephen most generously allowed me to use during a sabbatical at UMS a few years ago. On a fine day the sea changes from emerald blue and turquoise in the morning to shining silver by evening: quite the most stunning tropical vista I ever saw. What he doesn't mention is the bright but tasteful decor, the stereo system, the mini-kitchen and the drinks cabinet all incorporated in the same premsies. Best of all is the library of books, revealing the ecclectic and thoroughly civilised mind of the host, ranging from the poetry (sic) of Lilly Allen to a most scholarly (and entertaining) history of Oxford University, to say nothing of the history of Serbia during the First World War and the biography of the Rev. Charles Dodgson, better known as Lewis Carroll. I was never at a loss for the very best of distractions. ...... And one other thing, I can thoroughly recommend the vegetarian outlet in the Food Hall downstairs. Be sure to have a super Milo Ping with your lunch when you visit.

Thanks Stephen, a most enjoyable read!

At it's more whimsical it reminds me of a Bornean 'Last of The Summer Wine'. Is there a local version of Nora Batty I wonder :)

Best wishes,
JA

Dear Stephen,
Tom Mustill from Windfall Films here - I produce the series Inside Nature's Giants and am planning our last episode for this season; a 90 minute special looking at the biodiversity within one large tree (most likely a stranger fig) at Danum. We'll be filming from mid to late August and both Glen Reynolds and Jim Hardie have recommended that if you were available then it would be worth seeing if you'd be interested in being involved. Does this sound like it might be up your street? My contacts are below - hope to hear from you soon,
Best wishes,
Tom
